in2gr8mentalhealth CIC pulled out of X last night in response to the fascism, racism and xenophobia of the platform, which has become a dangerous space inflaming riots and violence against people of the global majority and Muslim peoples.
We will not be a part of Elon Musk's world he is constructing on there, and we stand against violent acts and oppressions against our fellow marginalised human beings, which have been going on throughout history, and are resurfacing in events like the riots this week.
In our community of mental health professionals with experience of mental health difficulties, we include many who represent those being targeted by violent far-right extremism acts against them. We stand in solidarity, protection and support with all those who are afraid for their lives because of their faith, beliefs or the colour of their skin, in general, and particularly over these rioting days.
We know that social inequalities are determinates of poor mental health in society. Our society only needs to look to its most marginalised to understand the real truth of its health or lack of. What does 'civilization' really mean? Because from our perspective, we may think we are civilised, but are we humanised? No. These seem to be two different questions.
You will find us here on our website, on Facebook and on Instagram, although we remain alert to the deleterious nature of social media in general, as well as its relative benefits.
Sometimes, the only remaining protest for change regarding organisations, is to walk out, thereby removing energy and support for it, in the hope that it's lifeforce grows thin and it can no longer support itself. This is particularly true of consumerist organisations.
We are tiny, but values led, we are not about to topple X by leaving, being but a fly on its flanks, but the more that people and organisations make time for conscious values led decisions, especially the hard ones (this particular one wasn't at all hard) , the more there is hope that stigmatised automaton thinking and process, and violence, can be interrupted and called to account.
Our thoughts go out to all those today who are afraid to leave their homes, we pray for the swift restoration of harmony in our communities, justice for those who have been hurt, we see those who are supporting the clear- ups and hope that it is their inspirational acts of solidarity which go viral.
Take care of each other.
Natalie
